Not a coup,
but a cow”
Dan West
Founder of Heifer International
Dan West founded Heifer International in 1944. He got the idea that families in need could lift out from hunger and poverty if they were provided with training and resources.
Almost 75 years later, Heifer has supported more than 34 million of families all around the world.
ACHIEVING DECENT
INCOMES
through:

Trained producing families
Through Farmer field schools (ECAs) the producing families learn how to create a business and how to organize themselves to improve their production processes.

Organized Communities
Through the knowledge and skills that Farmer Field Schools provided to people of the associative organizations and thanks to initiatives such as Auto Savings and Loan Committees (CAAPs) we achieved more empowered and participatory communities.

Key alliances
We work hand in hand with cooperative associations across the region and connect them with other key actors such as companies and organizations.
CHAIN
PASS
What makes Heifer International unique is the Pass on the Gift approach. The families that have received resources from Heifer will donate the first goods they have produced or an equivalent, starting a solidarity chain that is transformational for thousands of lives. The simplicity and efficiency of this method focused on a sustainable development of the family, made it possible to double the investments in the last years and benefit more families.
